They never seem to give up,Â
never house any doubtÂ
that what they are doingÂ
has merit. But it gets harderÂ
and harder to be sure Â
all the afflicted moments Â
I could have changed don’tÂ
stack up like the booksÂ
my mother read beforeÂ
staring out at the empty Â
room around her. In the meadow Â
they catch my eye, then flitÂ
capriciously: Houdini disappearingÂ
then coming back—voila.Â
Like us, they pour outÂ
their light that they may be found.Â
Some are up in the trees, Â
some low to the ground.Â
Most live just a few daysÂ
looking for a way to leaveÂ
their mark without having           Â
overstayed their keep.
